Anyone who lived in DC in the 1960s and was familiar with soul music/the r&b scene probably would have known JOE TATE, saxophonist, composer, arranger, and music producer for bands like The Blendels, The King Cobras, and the original Soul Searchers. On Sat 3/30 at 9am, DJ Mackie is joined in studio by Kevin Coombe and Joe Tate's old friend photographer Joel Jacobson to talk about Tate's music and legacy.
Beyond thrilled to have had special guest THE SPACE LADY on Lost Treasureson Sat 3/16 at 9am. Susan talked about her career starting back in 1980 as a busker on the streets of Boston and San Fran, providing insight into her ideas on music and the world. Thanks to Mississippi Records for releasing the ethereal sounds of Susan a.k.a. Suzy Sounds a.k.a. The Space Lady!
DC jazz legend, multi-instrumentalist, Howard graduate, and musical genius Andrew White (1942-2020) is the focus of this week's Lost Treasure, highlighting a special donation by archivist Ray Barker: the complete Andrew White catalogue on vinyl for the Peoples' Archives at MLK DC Public Library. Guests include Richard Harrington, Jeff Krulik and Andrew's cousin Nikki Covington. This originally aired on Sat March 9 at 9:00am.
I am sad to report that Ray Barker passed from cancer on March 26, 2024. I was glad that he got to hear this episode before he died. And thankful to Michele Casto and the MLK Public Library for hosting Ray's memorial service on Sunday April 14th. Ray's complete collection of Andrew White records is now housed in the People's Archives at MLK. |
