LOST TREASURES EPISODE #9
(archived recording here) Lost Treasures on WOWD 94.3 FM welcomes music impresario, musician, and Cuneiform label owner Steve Feigenbaum this Saturday, September 4th from 9am to 10am. 40 years ago in the environs of Silver Spring/Takoma Park, Steve Feigenbaum and friends started up their own independent record label: Random Radar Records. Releasing cutting edge records, avant-rock, and other music considered “outside” of the mainstream, Random Radar Records launched the music careers of many area musicians (like The Muffins and Mars Everywhere) and also helped international artists (like UK’s Art Bears) to distribute their unique sounds to the world. Steve Feigenbaum will be in-studio to discuss the formation of Random Radar, to reflect on the DC music scene from that time, and to listen to some of the music released on Random Radar Records. Tune in this Saturday to Lost Treasurers to hear more about this influential record label that was an important part of the independent music scene in the 1970s. LOST TREASURES EPISODE #8
(archived recording here) WOWD-FM welcomes American primitive guitar legend Max Ochs to the station this Saturday, August 18th for an in-studio discussion and performance. Max Ochs will be talking about the relatively obscure and independent Fonotone record label, founded by the “King of 78s” Joe Bussard of Frederick, MD. In the 1960s, Ochs recorded several instrumental songs for Fonotone including his seminal tune “Imaginational Anthem” – a title which has been appropriated by the Tompkins Square label and used for their various compilation albums focusing on solo acoustic guitar. He also recorded for his musical colleague John Fahey’s Takoma Records label in 1966. On Saturday’s Lost Treasures, Max will discuss the importance of Fonotone Records and independent records, especially when it comes to less commercial genres or styles like “primitive guitar” or “outsider folk.” As a performer and participant in last April’s THE THOUSAND INCARNATIONS OF THE ROSE guitar festival in Takoma Park (and produced by Rhizome, among others), Max will also talk about the growth of this music especially among younger players. Listeners will be treated to some in-studio performances as well. Tune in this Saturday at 9am on 94.3 FM or stream us on the web at www.takomaradio.org |
