This Saturday morning at 9am, DJ Mackie will explore the sometimes “lost” instrument known as the Theremin. Named for its inventor, Leon Theremin, the innovative instrument was introduced in the 1920s as one of the first electronic musical instruments. Theremins are distinguished by the fact that they are played without the performer touching the instrument. The musician moves his or her hands in proximity to the theremin to control the tone of the sound. Few musical instruments are capable of such intimate expression, nor provide the unique visual appearance of performance.
On Saturday, DJ Mackie welcomes in-studio Arthur Harrison and Amber Dunleavy, two local thereminists who have performed together at Rhizome DC, The Electric Maid, the Takoma Park Planetarium at Montgomery College, and the Blue Groove Soundz in Arlington, VA. Having performed with Rupert Chappelle, Jobs for America and with other groups, such as The Parlour Scouts and b, Art's personal interest in the theremin also includes their design and manufacture through his company, Harrison Instruments, Inc. harrisoninstruments.com. Amber Dunleavy is a versatile theremin player, who has been a constant member of the experimental rock band Alzo Boszormenyi and the Acid Achievers. She is also a member of Croniamantal and Governor Silver & The Queen Bees and has collaborated with a variety of local artists including Tag Cloud, Black Saturn, T.M. Hanna, and T.V. John.
